Narrow Boats

A painted castle graces the stern of a modern narrow boat

As usual, I was trying to get some fresh air
and decided to walk along the Loughborough Canal
Was feeling a bit brave now that Spring is here...
The first time I tried to walk there (in autumn), I turned back after 2 minutes because there were some guys smoking under the bridge in the dark
-shudder-

Narrow boats are peculiar to the UK
The first ones were built to fit the canals of England and Wales as a means of carrying cargo
These boats were pulled by horses until steam engines were invented
I'd like to see a horse-drawn boat some time though..

The practice of decorating the narrow boats started in the 19th century
These days, many of these boats are used for leisure
And I think people have been really creative about it..

I especially like this; it's practical yet whimsical
.. like something out of a children's story book
When i was taking the picture, I half expected a tiny imp to jump out..

and oh.... look who's had too much to eat
