Cheese Rolling in Glocestershire

Pictures taken on the 25th of May

It was Erin's idea to go to the Cheese Rolling festival on the late spring bank holiday
and I went along because I thought i could take loads of legal pictures of other people
I was quite wrong..
It was too crowded and i'm too short to see above the crowd
:{

We got to Cooper's Hill at about 11 plus in the morning, and it was already packed out!
this was taken with my camera raised above my head

So what happens is that..
1. A block of cheese is thrown down the hill
2. People race after it.. in whichever fashion they choose (run or roll)
The winner gets the cheese, the certificate, and erm.. loads of mud
(as well as potential damage to any number of body parts)

I think the hill is just a bit too steep to run after a block of cheese
It is steeper than what the picture tells you (because I was shooting from behind the crowd)
I'd rather buy my cheese from the Egg Man in the market
Thank you very much

The first race of the day..
I obviously tried to take this from under someone else's armpit
:(
I think it was the dude in cream who knocked himself unconscious mere seconds later

There was just the one food van for the thousands that turned up
I'm seriously considering selling food next year at the race
ha

The spectators who blocked my view
some came at 9am to camp out to watch the races at noon
that's .. so singaporean..
:P

Booze was the order of the day; loads of people turned up with beer cans
oh well.. this is the UK..
Can't expect any less hey?

A little boy secures a grand stand view with the help of his doting father

In between the cheese rolling races, there were uphill races
when the race for Under-12 girls was announced, Erin and Dave grinned at me
and told me to go for it
-_-
i so need to grow taller

Since I was too short, I missed most of the action
But Erin and Dave got a pretty good video of some people trying to kill themselves in the name of Tradition
(and a 12.5kg block of Glocestershire cheese)
hiakz!

You should have used the stilts :P Only kidding...I've been teased for the same reason so many times and now I just tell myself that it is an asset ('Small things are beautiful', they say) than a SHORTcoming :D
I haven't heard of that festival, let alone being to one. Thanks for sharing.

Hi L'l Mai,
Hear what I say,
You might cry and cry,
With cheese thru the day.

Your blog's full of food,
With dishes galore,
Surely in the mood,
To eat more and more.

Tis wise to stay healthy,
And keep yerself trim,
If tum's too wealthy,
You'll never stay prim.

Hi Sir:
You just reminded me that you were my favourite literature teacher! I AM trim though, in fact, trimmer than the last time you saw me!
