After Paris, it didn't feel like Zürich had a lot of things to see
I wanted to walk the complete tourist circuit and so i continued to the mouth of Lake Zürich
i was in luck til then, this being the only sunny day since I arrived in switzerland
but when i reached the harbour, the sky was beginning to darken
the harbour was lined with yachts.. and on the right of the lake, houses sit astride the hill range like lego pieces
(i was always trying to get a shot of those houses, but i never managed to)
i was starving by then.. so i got myself a huge hot dog (bread was free flow)
i was so careless that i paid for my food in Euro instead of Francs, and so was overcharged
but at that point, it began to drizzle
so i ate in the rain and shared my food with this swan
he's a big bully and he won't let anyone else come near me
the drizzle was thankfully shortlived
so i took a short walk towards Theatrestrasse ("strasse" is German for "street")
a group of school children on excursion
i promptly got lost again after that..
maybe because i expected the streets to be bigger and the distance to be longer
turning back to the station, i passed through Niederdorf, the trendy area
it's a busy street full of shops and bars
snooping around, i found ethnic african/asian stuff, jewelry, books, flowers, candies.. everything was rather pricey
what caught my attention was this antique bookstore.. it took all my willpower not to go in
The famous Grossmünsterplatz
The front facade..
we went in single file and everyone was respectfully quiet
The interior was a marvel of architecture with stained glass windows
The old testament was showcased in a glass box
i paid 2 Euros (??) to climb the tower
it was a narrow winding staircase made of stone/cement mostly
on one side, there was a rope to hold on to
we marched up single file and caught our breath at the few landings
(reminds me of the trip up the castle in Toronto)
after ages, we finally reached the top.. and the view was amazing
a little girl peers out of the balcony of the church tower
The clock tower on the other bank of the Limmat river
i got my chocolates on Niederdorf, but skipped the exotic flavours like the ones that are infused with chilli
and then, i found a supermarket near the train station and bought more chocolates
including one that has honeycomb in it (i love how the air in the chocolate escapes as you eat it :D )
all before catching the train to the airport
:)
