Paris : Day 2 - Work

[yeay, i finally found a way to bypass the problems with uploading photos :) ]
Photos uploaded on Photobucket

i woke up at 330 this morning..
after writing the Day 1 entry, i decided to peek out of my hotel room and take pics
somehow, at 5 am, it wasn't as dark as i expected cos of the many street lights

This is the church beside the SpineVision office
i haven't been inside.. but the architecture is amazing
Michelle (one of my SV colleagues) says this style is found in only 3 churches in Paris

The stretch of shops/cafes on the right side of the road opposite my room

so.. i finally fell asleep at 630.. and woke up at 8
my very clever Blackberry doesn't ring the alarm on weekends
bleargh!

i had barely enough time to get ready and gobble up 2 pastries
before boarding the cab that was waiting for us

The sun was out.. and the sky was really a nice blue
:)
but it was colder than yesterday cos the wind was quite strong

i tried to catch the sun rise on the way..

it was a good thing i ate so little
cos even before i see the poor pig, the driver's weaving made my stomach churn
we reached the Ecole Nationale
Vétérinaire d'Alfort before 9
we were told that it is the oldest vet training school in France

we were met by Olivier and the vet, Antoine
who told me he's doing his PhD on tissue engineering of the aorta.. focussing on genetics and cell biology
it seems like every guy i meet here does/has done TE (Olivier did his masters on TE of spine)

i took this pic while we were waiting for the surgeon and the rep from Belgium
it's the view from the presentation room

we scrubbed in at 10..
Anne-Virginie was right.. the pig was smelly
and i felt quite bad seeing it prone with its back totally open
for a while, i worried that i might vomit..
i got 'grand-stand seats' cos i'm the smallest size..
and they were worried i can't see so they pushed me to the centre
while Oliver and Luke (the belgium rep) looked over my head
O_o

so i was right beside the pig
poor little thing
by the way, it's about the same weight as me..
aagh

the surgeon is a very nice and jovial guy who kept worrying that the pig will end up paraplegic
i wish we could have done it on a dead pig...
i felt terrible seeing it breathe.. even tho it was under anasethsia
i had to keep telling myself.. it's pork

anyway.... we got our hands-on after the debrief with the surgeon
so we did the transverse process, the bi-cortical, and the neurostimulation
they had to lower the operating table cos i was too short

when we were done, the pig was euthanised and Olivier and I patted it to sleep
:(

gonna have to sacrifice another pig on monday... again

as usual, we finished later than scheduled.. 2 hours later
we were shivering when we had to walk back to the presentation room
minus the scrubs and the overcoat..
it was so windy that the sun had no effect
we saw some horses in the campus
and Antoine told us they had a equine surgery clinic in the hospital
how cool!

this is the car park of the Ecole.. d'Alfort

on the way back to hotel,we passed by Lac Daumesnil..
but there were 2 many cars and .. this is all i got of it..
